  • Montana To Screen Children Under Five For Autism

    Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) wants to identify the number of Montana children under five who have autism, state officials said Wednesday.

    To help pinpoint that information, DPHHS will spend $384,000 to offer free autism screenings at various clinics across the state effective immediately.

    The effort will create a list of children eligible to receive services for a new Medicaid program called the Autism Waiver for Children Program announced last month.

  • CDC Grant Extends Health Resources To Those Affected By 9/11 Attack

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it is seeking proposals to provide access to health screenings, diagnostic services, and treatment for residents, students and other ?non-emergency responders? impacted by the Sept. 11, 2001, World Trade Center disaster. Under this grant program, the CDC expects to award up to $30 million over the next three years to help people whose health was, or may have been, adversely impacted by the World Trade Center attack, particularly by the dust and debris.

  • Hawa'ii Tobacco Sales To Minors Rise

    This year's survey by the Hawai'i State Department of Health's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD) shows that illegal sales of tobacco to minors in Hawai'i has increased from 8.7 percent in 2007 to 11.2 percent in 2008. At the current rate, Hawai'i is above the national average of 10.5 percent. The 13th annual survey was conducted by a joint program with the University of Hawai'i's Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i and ADAD. The program conducts inspections of retail outlets that sell tobacco to determine the extent of illegal sales of tobacco products to minors.

  • Tobacco Prevention Campaign Urges Texas Youth To Spit It Out

    The Texas Department of State Health Services' (DSHS) Office of Tobacco Prevention and Control unveiled a new campaign called Spit It Out, designed to prevent the use of smokeless tobacco, sometimes referred to as dip. The new campaign launched at the Texas FFA Convention, which attracts about 10,000 teens from across the state.

    The campaign targets teens because while only 4 percent of Texas adults use smokeless tobacco, 8 percent of Texas youth use it.
